Help Portrait started last year when commercial photographer Jeremy Cowart wanted to give back to his community. Seeing that there were many individuals and families whom had either lost their pictures or never had them taken, Cowart and a team of provided an opportunity for those less fortunate. On December 4th, 2009 photographers around the world found people in need and invited them to a photo session to simply take their pictures.

The goal of Help Portrait is make anyone feel special that otherwise would not. Homeless, poverty stricken, and single parents are just a few groups of people Help Portrait reaches out to. When someone hits a low point in life it can become a struggle to feel valued and to simply feel beautiful. That’s where a printed photograph can make all the difference and that’s where Help Portrait steps in. They use the holiday season, when people are more likely and willing to give back, to make that special impact in people’s lives.

Professional photographers, hobbyist, vacation picture-takers – you name it. Anyone and everyone that is willing to volunteer their time and their cameras can participate in a Help-Portrait event. Last year, Help Portrait had over 6,000 volunteers across the US and in more than 60 countries. Make-up artists, lighting specialists, and many other people pitched in for one day to do the best they to make the “worthless” feel valuable.

Many Help Portrait sessions will be happening globally on December 4th. However, not all of them must be on the set date. If you’d like to learn more about setting up your own help-portrait-style session visit their website here.
If you’d live to participate in a Help-Portrait session where you live. Check out their location finder here
